What a Black-Eyed Susan taught me about Resilience

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9

Resilience often points to the person. When I think of resilience, I think of how our culture has defined it as the “power within” or “girl boss” or “working mom” do you get my point?

But, resilience at it’s definition is: to be able to “withstand” “recover quickly from difficulties” “toughness” and while we may be given these qualities, it sure doesn’t come from our own power.

Tuesday Encouragement

This Tuesday, I’m encouraging you: don't try to claim self-resilience. Is that a term? I’m not sure, but I certainly know that we do it.

We’ve been looking at the Black-eyed Susan’s within this series, and how do you always see these flowers? Paired. A Black-eyed Susan on it’s own simply is not all what it’s cracked up to be. It would be the back up singer in a bouquet of flowers. It has to be paired with others in order to really enhance it’s and others beauty.

Can I motion today that resilience means being the “backup singer?”

It means being ok as the one who is behind the scenes. It's knowing the show isn’t all about you.

It’s about your dependance on the Lord. It’s about giving the glory to Him for all that He has helped you withstand, recover from, and be downright tough.

Because truly, we are weak on our own. Our resilience doesn’t come from "ourselves" or our "inner strength". True Resilience comes when you’ve recognized that in order to truly help you withstand this difficulty, you can tap into someone much stronger than yourself.

Actually, bear with me as I take this to a deeper level of dependance:

A very wise women recently shared with a helpful application to this very topic. She shared with me how whisper prayers of "Oh Lord, help me get through this" can be transformed into even deeper dependance of: "Oh Holy Spirit, please do this for me."

Instead of asking the Lord to give me the power like the first whisper prayer suggests, the second whisper prayer suggests that I am laying myself down to allow the Spirit to use me for his good works.

This has been helping me recognize just how little I am capable of and how much sweeter it is when I daily surrender to the Lord asking Him to work through me in these little whisper prayers. I'm going to continue to dive deeper into this and I hope you will too. As I have there are so many passages of scripture that come to mind.

Psalm 138 and Psalm 139 are some great passages to remember who it is you are asking for help. Sister, the Lord cares SO MUCH for you. Look at how David reflects in giving thanks for the great Power of the Lord in Psalm 138. Read the beauty of scripture in Psalm 139 and see how David sings praise to the Lord for how deeply he knows us.

1You have searched me, Lord,
and you know me.

...

Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

...

13  For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14  I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.

Psalm 139:1,7-8,13-14

Be encouraged, know that when you inevitably try to “fix” this on your own, the Lord has grace that is sufficient for you to turn this weakness as a way to look to him. Remember, He not only knows you, he loves you so so deeply and we cannot flee from him. He is here with us, so why don't we just acknowledge him and allow him to make us perfect in our weakness so that we may boast in not ourselves, but in him. In fact, how about we trade "resilience" for "reverence" today. May the power of Christ rest on you today dear sister.
